Cholesterol - How does a high cholesterol can affect your blood vessels

According to Dr. Stephen Fort, a cardiologist and director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Center and associate professor of medicine at Dalhousie University, a high cholesterol is a risk factor for obstruction of blood vessels. Like a hose may be clogged by mineral deposits from hard water, your blood vessels become narrow and clogged due to high cholesterol.
A high cholesterol in the bloodstream of injured blood vessel wall and causes inflammation. The injury meant that other cells come into contact with the walls of blood vessels, causing a greater accumulation of cholesterol. These changes lead to the formation of a plaque, a buildup of cholesterol and fat on blood vessel walls. Over time, plaques can become larger and more numerous, and blood vessels can develop scar tissue.
When the plates become larger, they begin to clog blood vessels, thereby limiting the oxygen supply to the brain, heart and limbs. This can cause symptoms such as angina (chest pain) and poor circulation in the limbs. The plates can also develop ulcers, which can cause a rupture.
The body reacts to the plate damaged by forming a blood clot, which can cause a complete blockage of blood vessels and cause a heart attack, when an artery pumping blood to the heart. Part of the blood clot can also dissolve and clog a blood vessel elsewhere in the body. This is called an embolism.
Over time, a high cholesterol can damage blood vessels, causing serious complications such as heart attack and stroke. This is why, it is so important to understand and manage your cholesterol.
